Audi Dealership Belgium

The fire occurred in the external compound of a large Audi dealership in Belgium, in October 2014, and was a deliberate act of arson involving 6 cars which burned within very close proximity to the panels.

Real Fire Case Study

The building is of steel frame construction clad with Kingspan insurer-approved PIR insulated panels, and provides single-storey showroom and workshop facilities and an internal mezzanine floor for additional vehicles and back-of-house accommodation.

It is likely that the cladding will have been subjected to peak incident radiative heat flux of at least 31.8kW/mfor at least 10 minutes. To put this into context, the maximum regulatory heat flux limit allowed on a building to prevent fire spread without impingement is 15W/m2.

Protection against Fire Spread

The sandwich panels exposed to these conditions sustained damage in terms of delamination of the exposed steel skin, removal of the paint coating and charring of the PIR core to a depth of approximately 40mm.

The panels prevented fire spread and there was no evidence of fire penetration in to the interior of the workshop. Trading continued as normal the next day.

Minimal Business Interruption

This real fire case study video explores how Kingspan insurer-approved PIR core panels protected an Audi dealership from fire spread when 6 cars were set alight outside the building. Despite an intense fire load, damage to the insulated panels cladding the building was highly localised and business was able to continue the next day.
